Discover Iceland’s Newest Geothermal Escape: Laugarás Lagoon

This summer, Iceland introduces its latest geothermal destination: Laugarás Lagoon, a tranquil retreat where nature, wellness, and culinary artistry converge. Nestled along the Hvítá River in the village of Laugarás, just over an hour from Reykjavik, the lagoon is set within the famed Golden Circle, a scenic route known for its volcanic landscapes, geysers, and waterfalls.

What sets Laugarás Lagoon apart? For the first time in Iceland, a geothermal spa has been designed around a dramatic, 22-foot-wide waterfall, flowing between two thermal pools. The tiered hot springs are maintained at a soothing 100 to 104°F, complemented by two saunas, a cold plunge, swim-up bars, and multiple lounging areas. Whether soaking under the sky or unwinding by the river, guests can relax in a setting that feels both grounded and extraordinary.

Opening August 15, Laugarás Lagoon joins Iceland’s growing collection of wellness experiences, following in the footsteps of iconic spots like the Blue Lagoon, Sky Lagoon, and Forest Lagoon, each uniquely tied to the island’s geothermal wonders.

But Laugarás isn’t just about water.

At the heart of the experience is Ylja Restaurant, led by acclaimed Icelandic chef Gísli Matt. With a deep connection to the land, the restaurant showcases a farm-to-table menu featuring foraged herbs, seaweeds, berries, and ingredients sourced from local farms, fisheries, and geothermal greenhouses. Expect bold, refined flavors: grilled lamb with pearl barley and hazelnuts, slow-cooked cod with herb sauce and mustard greens, and dishes cooked over open flame. For those on the go, a grab-and-go counter offers wholesome snacks, ideal for road trippers exploring the Ring Road.

  • Ösp: Adds a two-course meal and private changing room – 15,900 ISK (approx. $131 USD)

Laugarás Lagoon welcomes visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the summer months, and until 9 p.m. in winter. Guests aged 8 and older are welcome at the lagoon, while Ylja Restaurant is open to all ages.
